Can you tell when these photographs were taken? What do you see in the photograph that indicates the historical period?

Pay attention to details in the photograph like the clothes people are wearing, the objects they are using (tools, cars) and any signage you may see. This environmental context is rich with information about the historical period.

What elements of these photographs are similar; lighting, framing, cropping, point of view, context? How are they different?

Notice how distant or close the objects and subjects are and from what angle the photographer might have been standing. Consider where the source of lighting is coming from and if it’s natural or staged.

Is this photograph candid or “staged”? How can you tell?

Look carefully at all the elements in the photograph - subject, framing, lighting, point of view - for evidence of any sort of planning.

Consider the intended audience. For whom are these photographs being taken? How can you tell?

Though we may not know the photographer’s exact intention, we can make assumptions based on visual evidence and creative conjecture about what s/he is trying to communicate with the image.
